“I can’t go on any longer”, the little bird said, and his wings hung down in sorrow. “Well, that’s too bad”, the black cat answered, “if you can’t go on anymore, you’ll end up eaten.” The little bird could see the sharp and long claws, and fear raged against exhaustion. There had been endless fights and hunts between the two, so that the little bird didn’t have many feathers left. It was a pitiful sight. Sometimes it thought that it might be better to finally give in. No more hunter and hunted. Was there only one way out?
“Don’t you want to show me some mercy?” it asked the black cat, trying to catch its breath. The wings wouldn’t open anymore, the little body felt drained and heavy. “You have had your fun all this time, and I am tired of this never-ending hunt.” The air carried a strange scent of burnt leaves. The black cat smiled and said “This is life, there is no mercy. You fight, or you perish, no other choice” and then it raised its paw for the final strike.
‘No other choice.’ The words left a burning sensation in the little bird’s stomach. It closed its eyes to accept the inevitable end. The air stirred with heat and the little bird felt like it was being lifted into the sky. Its heart was beating like a drum and its head was spinning. Was it over yet, was it all gone? But no strike came and it could not feel any pain. Fearful, it opened its eyes again only to see that it was indeed flying. New, strong wings made of flames carried the little bird into the burning horizon, while the black cat foolishly sat on the ground to lick its burnt paws.
